The Port of Baltimore was established by the Maryland colonial General Assembly in 1706 at Locust Point for the tobacco trade. On July 30, 1729, the town of Baltimore was founded and named after Lord Baltimore, who was the Province of Maryland's first Proprietary Governor. His actual name was Cecilius Calvert, son of George Calvert, who became County Cork's (Ireland) first Lord Baltimore in 1625. The town grew quite quickly in the seventeen hundreds due to its sugar producing industry. Now, a visitor can stay in the best Baltimore hotels and discover the modern culture of this quirky town.

The Baltimore Waterfront Festival honors the unique culture of life on the water.
